Nine
"Nine" is a captivating journey through the intriguing world of numbers, where every element converges and resonates around the omnipresent figure of nine. Composed for concert band, this piece intricately weaves together musical motifs, structures, and concepts inspired by elements of the number nine.
The composition unfolds as a palindrome, consisting of nine sections that mirror each other, akin to the symmetrical design of the number itself. Within each section, a duality emerges, where the music fluctuates between converging towards “nine” while also exploring the unique characteristics of the respective numbered section.
Throughout the piece, the manipulation of musical elements reflects the theme of nine. Some melodies are crafted with precisely nine notes. Other times, rhythms are strategically crafted to reflect nine or the respective section, creating a rhythmic and harmonic tapestry that is both intricate and intriguing.
At times, musical math is applied to create interesting melodies and harmonies. For example, in the fifth section, where we have drifted the furthest from our starting place, we use the musical formula 5 + 5 = 9. In music, the interval of a fifth added to another fifth creates a ninth. The blend of these elements results in the creation of a beautiful melody, which then plays a vital role as the backbone for the ballad section of the musical composition.
